The Revival of a Superhero

We had a really awesome photo shooting session today. Our group is the first to have pictures taken because Bryan was sweating under two layers of shirt and a layer of fake abs.

Bryan putting on his costume, which is a very difficult thing to do as it comes in separate pieces and it does not hold together very well.

Luckily, he has two very beautiful assistants to help him out :D

After putting it on, we moved on to the make up. MLK has a dark skin tone, so we had to make Bryan darker to make him more realistic. Initially, we advised him to get himself tanned under the sun, but he didn't do it. So we had to put a lot of dark brown eye shadow on him since we could not find dark foundation.

Thankfully, Yazmin has a makeup kit... or one of her many makeup kits.

Chloe is experimenting her makeup skills on Bryan, and admits it was a lot of fun.

For some reason, Bryan looks happy about the entire dressing up process.

Setting up the studio took roughly 30 minutes as we have to get the lighting and the correct backdrop ready.

Mr Charles is working on his camera.

The lighting are turned on to illuminate Bryan's face and costume.

These are the outcome of the photo shoot. We started off with basic poses before moving on to special effects.

His angry expression when he charges up his ray.

And now, for the specials...

The modern day MLK soaring through the sky to fight racism.

This marks the end of our final project, which we have been doing for months in preparation. It ended very well and we are pleased with the outcome. We have learnt a lot during the entire process and we worked very well as a team. It was easy to get along with the members and all of us have been very cooperative until the end.

Designing MLK's costume... and the unfortunate lab rat

After the few months of planning, we came up with the ideals, aims, alternative history and the outlook of the newly improved version of Martin Luther King. Before this, MLK the superhero was only a fictional character in our minds and we are now officially bringing it to life.

Behold, MLK's costume! This was designed by Bryan, who is an expert in drawing abs.

Bryan, being the only guy in our group, was forced to dress up as MLK for the photo session. Our lecturer will be handling the camera and equipment.

We bought supplies and materials for the making of the costume. Some accessories were pretty challenging to obtain because they are not ready made. We did not go to the tailors to get the costume done because we thought it would be much more meaningful if we do it ourselves with our own abilities.

We make mistakes and along the way, we learn from it. That is the most important part of all. "It is not the destination, but the journey that matters most".

TADA! Fake abs! We got this fake ab idea from a shop selling horror merchandises, which sold an almost similar product at the price of 100+. To cut costs, we made a handmade one out of newspapers and cellophane tape.

Bryan inserted the fake abs, feeling as if it was his own for the very first time.

Yazmin helping Bryan to trace his 'muscles'.

Chilling time! Sandwich for breakfast!

Yellow gloves, a button flashlight, fabric paint, an old belt and a snorkeling suit for miscellaneous accessories.

Drawing the chest muscles to bring out the muscular look.

Painting the rest of costume. This was actually a plain, red long sleeve shirt.

Modifying the button flashlight for MLK's logo.

I will post the final outlook of the costume after the photo shoot session. Till then!

Pangkor Island 17 Oct - 20 Oct 2013 videos

TA DA ~~~ The videos are here! There are three videos (one video for each day) in total.

DAY 1

DAY 2

DAY 3

All in all, it was an amazing trip. We did not regret making the choice to go there. We learnt loads of new stuff - teamwork, not giving up, endurance and perseverance and including not chasing after your fallen cap.

Our classmates were awesome - we shared supplies and tips even if what we were doing are solely confidential for each team. The semester 2 students are really really epic - they helped us with our projects and biked with us even though they had their own tasks to do.

The lecturers were amazing. They were really proactive and often took immediate action in responding to the students' needs. They made the trip very fun and lively and the presents (fish snacks) were tasty.

The hotel managers were delighted to help out with our trip and they deserve a huge 'thank you' for keeping track on our bicycle expedition. They handed out water along the way, fixed the bike and arranged transport to the clinic to those who were injured. And we have never eaten such delicious seafood in our lives.

Pangkor Trip 17 - 20 Oct 2013 Trailer

Foundation in Design Semester 1 and 2 students recently went for a study trip to Pangkor Island. It was a really exciting, eventful and fun adventure. We captured loads of videos with the camera and are now in the process of making the full video which tells the whole story of our trip.

We present a bonus trailer :)

Stay tuned!

MLK process of a superhero

Updating from the previous post, we as a group are suppose to find what personifies MLK, have a situation to connect with his power and also have an action plan.

As for personification, we came up with Panda, cause who doesn't love a panda huhh. The reason behind it is because panda are in black and white which indicates for the white and black people, and also panda came from china so their are Asian which fits perfectly well because it's not only meant for the white and black but also the Asians. As you know by know MLK fights for equality and unity amonst all that's why it fair to have chosen a panda to symbolize him.

Carry on, for the situation : Racial riots
Riots doesn't bring anything good, it always end up with violence which is killing each other, hurting other people. Why should we have a riot? We know that it will end up bad don't we? Why continue doing such thing? People die and suffer. Changes need to be done no matter what. We don't want to see anyone getting hurt for fighting something that can be done in friendly way. We don't have to involve with any violence at all. Live in peace are much better than worrying wether you are safe wherever you are. I mean pre cautious are good, but what if you can't even get home safely even tho your are not involve with any of the riot? We keep searching for peace but the answer is there. Peace can be made if everyone open up their mind and try to accept one another rather than hate on each other for the rest of their life.

For the action plan we have taken incidents that has happen on the past, where black people are fighting for their rights in living in America. White people were brainwash by the thought of black people are dangerous and only meant for being slaves. MLK fought for black people right and try to change of what white people think of them. He tries to protest against rasicm, which considered the biggest problems faced through out the whole world. In particularly talking about Malaysia. We have three main races living in Malaysia even tho the country may seem on peace but everyday they are fighting for their rights, not in a violence way tho, but they are still fighting with each other. Take example on recent election, even after the election they are still having riots and creating havoc just to satisfies their own needs. We need to change this, that's why having a superhero like MLK would be good. We have to show everyone that being racist are no good.

This is how we interpret about our superhero MLK. See him in the costume? Suits him right? See how the bears are combine into a panda, awesome isn't it? Imagine if everyone stops fighting and start living in unity despite their differences.

Project #2 SUPERHEROES

For Project #2, we are asked to choose a real life person who we think is like a superhero and illustrate his traits according to Edward de Bono's 'Six Thinking Hats'.

In this particular topic we have chosen Martin Luther King as our superhero. His target is to fight for the black people's rights. It is not fair to just assume that black people are only slaves. We are all humans who are just different by our own distinct specialty and characteristics.

Martin Luther King addressed this problem faced by his people and himself and he tried to gain rights for equality among the people. Martin Luther King approached people with the ideals of peace and not with violence to make things worse. Unfortunately, there were people who were against it. They protested and made matters worse for him so that he will give up his hope/aim on achieving rights for the black people.

One of his speeches, 'I have a dream' was really popular because the message to end racism in the United States was depicted in a powerful and charismatic way which touched the hearts of a lot of people.

Sadly, Martin Luther King was assassinated in a motel room the day before he was suppose to give another speech. His sudden death shocked the world where many were waiting for an end to inequality among different races. Even though he had left the world, his legacy and dream still resides in the memories of the  people today.

He is a symbol to equality among different races. That is the reason why our group has chosen him as a superhero. In Malaysia, there are 3 main different races which are Malays, Chinese, and Indians. A few racial riots happened in the past, and one of them is the May 13 incident. If Martin Luther King was still alive he would be a great superhero to fight for equality.

The mind map that we designed comprises of 6 thinking hats. There are green, red, yellow, black, white and blue .

Green hat - creativity 'what can you do with it'
Red hat - emotion 'how do you feel about the design' human reaction
Black hat - negativity 'critic'
Yellow hat - positive 'supporting'
Blue hat - planning, organization
White hat - research, knowledge, factual data

Our mind map has something like a wheel behind it so we can turn it around to see information about Martin Luther King in accordance with the color of the hats.

Martin Luther King is also wearing a costume with a capital M in the middle. When he flashes a bright light from his logo, anyone who are racist they will transform into peace loving, open minded citizens. Cool power right???

MONEH MONEH MONEH

This is my wallet.

There are a couple notes inside. It is usually empty by the end of the month.

A close-up view of the money I ---

--- wait a minute, wait a minute, WAIT A MINUTE!

What is that white card-like thing behind those 50 dollar notes?

TA-DA! Introducing the Tags! A special currency specially made for students for Creative Thinking Skills.

So what do Tags do?

They are like little tokens where we exchange them with scores by the end of the semester. Each group has a start up Tag account of 10 Tags. 1 Tag is worth 10 points.

But why are we using these Tags?

In Creative Thinking Skills, students must play a game. The rules are as following:

1. Groups of 4 to 6 members are made and will remain in the same group for 18 weeks.
2. Leaving the group and changing of members must require written approval.
3. Groups are allowed to compete with each other.
4. Alliances will require written agreements between two groups.
5. Groups which performs admirably for any assigned tasks or projects will be rewarded TAGS which is worth 10 points each.
6. Groups are allowed to requisite favors from the facilitator or each other but with the cost of 1 TAG per favor.
7. Lifeline is considered an emergency extension to the deadline will be worth 5 TAGS. Each group has 2 Lifeline. Each lifeline is considered as 2 days only

So basically, we are playing what sounds like a war game where each group acts like a different country. I have a feeling that A LOT of drama will happen in the 18 weeks.

I am a very organized person. I separate my money and arrange them according to increasing value. Since I am keeping the Tags behind the 50 dollar notes, does that mean I regard the Tags with value of equal or higher than a 50 dollar note?
